What does each Buffalo-area listing show?

Every listing shows the facility's name, city, address, phone, certified bed count, NYSDOH operating certificate number and which assisted living certifications it holds, taken from state records rather than from the operator.

34 featured communities also get a full profile: first-licensed date, operator of record, every inspection on NYS Health Profiles since July 2022, and any enforcement action. Across all 42 communities, 1 had no violations cited in that window and 14 had a formal enforcement action.

Is assisted living the same as memory care in New York?

No. Assisted living is an ALR-licensed adult care facility; memory care is the separate SNALR certification for dementia, and a community can hold one without the other.

Assisted living (ACF with ALR / EALR)Memory care (SNALR)
What it isAn Adult Home or Enriched Housing Program licensed by NYSDOH that also holds Assisted Living Residence licensure; EALR lets a resident stay as medical needs grow.A Special Needs Assisted Living Residence certification for residents with dementia, added on top of an ALR license.
What it isn'tNot a nursing home: no 24-hour skilled nursing under 10 NYCRR Part 415.Not a separate license, and not proven by a brochure that says “memory care” — the SNALR certification is the proof.
Who it fitsSomeone who needs help with bathing, dressing, medications and meals but is medically stable.Someone whose dementia makes wandering, exit-seeking or unsafe judgment a daily concern.
How to check itThe ALR and EALR bed counts in the NYSDOH quarterly report (shown in our tables). The SNALR bed count. Zero SNALR beds means the building is not certified for dementia care.

Who licenses and inspects these facilities?

The New York State Department of Health licenses and inspects adult care facilities and nursing homes; Erie and Niagara counties are covered by its Western Regional Office.

NYSDOH inspects each adult care facility for relicensure every 12 to 18 months, investigates complaints, and posts the results on NYS Health Profiles. Each profile on this site links straight to that facility's state record.
